Design Lesson: Create a place for a treasured piece of furniture
This room started with two pieces the client wanted to keep…the soft antique area rug and the impressive, quartz top, console cabinet. I based the warm-neutral color scheme on the area rug, but the expansive console was something that required the perfect place. The architecture of the room dictated the placement of the piece…along the empty wall. So that was an easy decision. But as I tinkered with the design, I realized the console needed more than just a wall with art and a TV. I needed to create a place to showcase the console. The solution, design a ‘case’ (such as a built-in) to house the console. The new custom built-in was designed to ‘hold’ the console, with the TV above, closed storage to house additional electronic pieces, and open shelving for display. Now the treasured piece fits perfectly in the architecture and decor of the space.
Think past the idea of filling a blank wall with just a piece of furniture. What does that piece need to integrate and/or showcase it in the space? Interior architectural elements, art work, color? Lots of options…let your mind wander!
