BENTZ STREET
First Floor Remodel Build Partner: Lighthouse Craftsman
This 2010 townhome was in need of a redesign in the kitchen and living room, and the challenge was significant. We had a small, narrow, open space that needed to increase storage, improve flow, and maintain a feeling of individuality between the spaces without losing design cohesion.
Our client likes warm tones and red/orange hues, and loves to collect art and interesting objects when traveling. They wanted dramatic fixtures and finishes, and a kitchen that was inviting and open, with interesting details
We wrapped the kitchen perimeter in an L-shape of custom cabinetry, mimicking the home’s crown molding at the 10-foot ceilings. The light and bright cabinet color is balanced with a custom hood, island, and butler’s pantry in a dark peppercorn. Metal fretwork is inset into some of the cabinet doors, adding texture and drama.
The range hood is banded in walnut, and that rich tone is mirrored by the walnut bar-height seating area. Over the island hang three pendants that are an interesting mix of vintage and industrial style. This kitchen isn’t just about good looks, though; the storage is endless, incredibly functional, and the space feels much bigger due to the layout. White oak flooring flows from the kitchen into the next space.
The adjacent living room has its own design personality, and it’s a harmonious and cozy transition from the kitchen. The long console provides more storage and a spot to have a cocktail bar. A wallpapered accent wall behind it and two vibrant lamps create a vibrant, defined space that begs for happy hour with friends.
A large, vintage-inspired rug in warm tones further defines the space and brings everything together beautifully. The flow between the two spaces is effortless, and the entire space somehow feels both larger and more cozy.
In addition to the kitchen and living space, we put in a new staircase railing, using more modern design with a mix of metal and white oak. This townhome may have a small footprint, but the final design creates an expansive feel, adds a ton of storage and function, and is a truly welcoming space that will surely be enjoyed.
