Creating More Space in Small Vintage Bathrooms
A 100-year-old house usually comes with lots of charm—and tiny bathrooms. This client’s home was no exception, and the request was for a more expansive master bath and hall bath. Stealing some space from a storage closet and moving the entryway turned the once-cramped master bath turned into a dreamy, spa-like space. Much-needed storage was cleverly tucked in between the shower and facing wall. Varied but complimentary tile textures were incorporated, including herringbone floor tile, marble wall tile, and an Arabesque tile accent in the shower. The finishes chosen both updated the bathroom and respected the tradition of this historic home.
The hall bath had no wiggle room for expansion, so visual space was created by moving the vanity and switching out the tub/shower with a glassed-in shower. A simple white subway tile was added to the walls, and a fun hexagon tile to the floors. This simple reworking of the layout and the use of light, bright design materials created a completely different—and more spacious feeling—bathroom. With a full house of four, the master bath can now serve as a retreat for tired parents, and the hall bath is more functional for the kids.
