"We asked Laura and Meredith to redo our family room with only one caveat -- the very assertively colorful Oriental rug had to stay! They eagerly took on this challenge and designed a room with cozy, comfortable furniture in our favorite colors and textures and with Mission-style touches that we love. Our family room was transformed from a tolerable way station into a welcoming, relaxing haven. The furniture they selected and the way they made the room work differently just draws you in and exudes a sense of calm and warmth."

A Contemporary Craftsman Family Room

This space is truly a family room. The clients have two active, elementary-school-age boys; so they wanted a kid-friendly, but also grown-up feeling for their new space.

The family room is open to a craftsman inspired kitchen...thus we chose to continue with the craftsman detailing.

We defined the focal point in the space by adding arts-and-crafts-style cabinet doors to the existing bookshelves. Craftsman-style, handmade tiles surround the fireplace--mirroring the patterns in the clients area rug. We also coordinated the rooms warm and cozy color and fabric schemes with the rug.

We began with a new space plan for the room, adding a curved sectional for better traffic flow, comfort, and plenty of seating.
The space does not have much natural light, so we wanted to add as much light as possible in the room. We combined three different types of lighting in the space: accent lighting to highlight the bookshelves, a fan light for general lighting, and a large, standing lamp by the sectional for reading.
A simple window treatment combines a shaped, upholstered cornice with a woven blind.
